Deledda’s brother Santus did scientific experiments. He successfully launched a hot-air balloon made of silk. Goat herders believed it to be the Holy Spirit descending over a mountaintop. Soon after they dropped to their knees in prayer.

- Archbishop Nathan Söderblom’s address at the Nobel banquet delighted the retiring author Deledda in a particular way, because he addressed her in Italian, and she could not forget his words: “In your literary work, all roads lead to the human heart…You have seen the road sign.”
