Nobel Medal Cash and Charity

Nelson Mandela donated part of his Noble Prize money to help street children.

Mandela supported about 50 charities fighting several social problems such as hunger, poverty and AIDS. “Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life. While poverty persists, there is no true freedom,” he stated.

Mandela donated a third of his presidential salary to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund which he founded. It strives to change the way society treats its children and youth. This long-term vision captures the central role society plays in shaping children’s lives. Its mission is to give voice and dignity to the African child by building a rights-based movement

In 2003, Mandela founded the Mandela Rhodes Foundation in partnership with the Rhodes Trust. Its mission is to build exceptional leadership capacity in Africa. It finds, funds and empowers young Africans who aspire towards the kind of leadership he embodied: leaders who can bridge historic divides and who use their talents for the betterment of their societies and his continent.

Mandela advocated for governments to declare a global AIDS emergency. His son with his first wife Evelyn Mase, Makgatho Mandela died of AIDS at the age of 54 yrs.
