Stigler confined himself to academic work. He excluded doing administrative work and any other work which was not of an academic nature. Around 1946 his mother asked him, “What are you?” With pride he replied, “Professor.” Ten years later she put the same question to him and he gave the same answer. Her response, “No promotion?”
